1 Month Appointment

We had our 1 month appointment today for William and the stats are...

10 pounds, 5 ounces
23.5 inches

Talk about a growing boy! 1 ounce shy of gaining a total of 3 pounds in one month. Wow!

We also talked to William's doctor about starting a sleep routine. Last night he slept one stretch of 5 1/2 hours. 4 hours had been his maximum, so we were very pleased to say the least. His doctor said he'd like for him to go down for the night around 8 pm and that those stretches will progressively get longer. We have been putting him "down for the night" at around 10-11 pm. I kind of like the idea of a later bedtime so I'm not waking up at 1 am because he went down at 8 pm... I'll have to ask my mommy friends about this one! We also decided we'd give the crib a whirl. I just put him down for a "nap" a couple hours ago and he went down pretty well. He didn't nap the entire 2 hours, but he was down for a good hour.

Baby steps! No pun intended.

1 Month Old

Happy 1 month birthday, William!

We can't believe today is William's 1 month birthday! It seems like yesterday we were meeting him at the hospital. Today he surprised us with a little move we weren't expecting this soon -- he rolled over. Three times in a row. My mom caught it on video and here it is below. Unfortunately, I was napping and missed it!

Other updates for this week... each day this week William has appeared more alert - as if he's really noticing his surroundings. The smile that has appeared while he was sleeping is starting to appear more often while he's awake and yesterday he made the biggest grin that I caught with my phone camera (see below). He's eating every 2-3 hours, napping pretty well during the day (though he sometimes still fights sleep during the day even when you can tell he's completely exhausted), sleeping really well at night since middle of week 3 by immediately going down instead of the usual daylight routine where he wants to check things out for a bit before falling asleep. Last night he went 4 hours between his middle of the night feeding. Hallejuah! We keep things very quiet and calm at night (no TV and only nightlights in our room and his nursery), so hopefully that has helped with distinguishing day and night for him. He doesn't like to be swaddled, loves his hands up by his face at all times, loves to be held and easily falls asleep on top of me, and holding him on his side and shushing seems to always do the trick when he's fussy (the only great take away for us from the Happiest Baby on the Block),  and isn't totally into a pacifier (he's working on holding it on his own and when he does it does help soothe him). It's been wonderful getting to know our little man and we are looking forward to his next month and all its milestones! Happy 1 month birthday, Mr. William! Our 1 month wellness visit is on Monday, so keep you posted on all his stats!

What's up with William

Time is FLYING by and I can't believe William is nearly 1 month old (this weekend). Week 2 with William was pretty... interesting, to say the least. He wasn't sleeping very much during the day at all (so much for "when the baby rests, you rest") and the nights were pretty sporadic with sleep too -- making for one very tired mama! I called the pediatrician and asked about this supposed "newborns sleep an average of 16 hours a day" and was told by the nurse to just give it some time. Sure enough, Week 3 came and it was a very different story. William was sleeping normally during the day after his feeding and the nights have been fantastic! He will sleep a solid 3 hours at night (with a handful of nearly 4 hour spots) and he goes down immediately after he's been fed. I've barely had to wake Matt to request help :) Matt has been really great at changing his diaper in the middle of the night to give me a couple more minutes in bed. Last night William fed at 10:45p.m., 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Not too shabby and I hope we can continue with the good progress!

3 weeks old

William also seems to be more "alert" in the past couple days. I feel like he's taking in more of his surroundings. His favorite thing to look at (besides his mama and dad!) is the fan in our family room. When you're holding him on the couch his eyes are immediately mesmerized by our dark ceiling fan against the white ceiling.

Another fun change in William is his ability to hold up his head for a few seconds at a time. He really started doing that in Week 2, but since then the time he holds his heads up when you're holding him against you gets longer and longer. Maybe all babies can do that, but I think he's especially strong for his age! :)

Holding his head up all by himself!

We just ordered some of William's newborn photos. The pictures were taken when he was just five days old. Here are a few proofs. They turned out amazing!

Happy 2 Week Birthday!

Quite the serious look for his 2 week birthday on February 8th

I can't believe William is already 2 weeks old (Wednesday was the actual day)! The days with a newborn are long, but at the same time go by so quickly. I don't know how many times I've asked Matt, where has the day gone? Every day has been different with William and each day I learn a little more about him. We had our 2 week appointment with his pediatrician on Friday and sure enough the little guy is still packing on the pounds.

His 2 week stats:

8 lb. 10 oz. - 43rd%
22 in. - 88th%

Our little lean and mean machine!

He had his first shot too - poor little guy. He yelped out the saddest wimper and two seconds later he was perfectly fine. The little band-aid was pretty cute :)

Some firsts for William...

Picnic on Park Ave. Don't mind the screeching baby
Lunch at Seito with Jenn
Bath time!
